"Ask A Mexican" poem by Edward Headington
|
Gustavo Arellano is one of the most provocative and popular columnists in Southern California and spoke at the Los Angeles Press Club last night. He is the recipient of the 2007 LA Press Club “President’s Award” and was honored at the Southern California Journalism Awards last June.
Transcripts:
An evening at the Press Club,
always a marquee event;
fireworks, drama, dynamite,
those who miss often lament.
Take last night, por ejemplo,
Ask A Mexican brought the sass;
even the famed Rodriguez writers,
must envy this rising iconoclast.
The great Luke Ford was there,
as well as Long Beach and Longabardi;
Anthea in the moderator’s chair,
Rory and Diana, rounding out the party.
Gustavo Arellano,
funnier in person than Mencia;
but if you mess with this bull,
you’re gonna get the verbal salchicha.
Armed with humor and history,
just telling it like it is;
he’s no “Paris Hilton of Latino journalism,”
on the contrary, quite the investigative wiz.
Watch out for the “PC pendejos” you mentioned,
and don’t upset the Irish and Chicanos;
unless, of course, they’re San Patricios,
then they’re down with the Leprecano.
Keep doing what you’re doing,
the satire and the drama;
bite and feed wherever necessary,
like a 4th estate chupacabra.
More popular than Morrissey,
insightful and inciteful to be sure;
well wishes to this columnist,
his wit and writing the allure.
See you at the Steve Allen theater;
it’s something to be had;
Tivo Grey’s Anatomy next time,
Because the Press Club is, like, rad.

Elizabeth Kucinich Speaks at MAPA Constitution Convention - Vol. 2
|
The Mexican American Political Association (MAPA) recently held its constitutional convention at the Sheraton Hotel in Downtown Los Angeles. Elizabeth Kucinich, wife of presidential aspirant, Dennis Kucinich, spoke to the Mapistas. Translation done by MAPA National President, Nativo V. Lopez.
The Mexican American Political Association, a multi-partisan advocacy organization, was founded in Fresno, California in 1963 and has chapters throughout California. It is dedicated to the constitutional and democratic principles of political freedom and representation for the Mexican, Mexican-American and Latino people in the United States.
Nativo V. Lopez is currently the National Director of Hermandad Mexicana Latinoamericana (HML) and the National President of the Mexican American Political Association (MAPA). Both charges require of him full-time advocacy for the civil, human, labor, and immigrant rights of Mexicans, Mexican Americans, and Latinos throughout the United States. He has dedicated his life to these causes since his years as a high school student where he founded the first student movement organization, United Mexican American Students (UMAS). He was born in Boyle Heights, Los Angeles in 1951 to Mexican American parents, and is of both eighth-generation native U.S. born and immigrant stock. Nativo met the legendary immigrant organizer, leader, and advocate, Humberto “Bert” Corona, in 1971 and worked with him in various capacities for thirty years with the organizations Center for Autonomous Social Action (CASA), Hermandad Mexicana, and MAPA. He was a lead organizer in last year’s springtime mass protest pro-immigrant marches and was part of the creation of the National Alliance for Immigrant’s Rights (NAIR) in Chicago, Illinois.

Bruce Springsteen on 60 Minutes
|
Bruce Springsteen sat down with Scott Pelley of 60 Minutes this past Sunday to talk about his new album, Magic, and why he is still writing and performing at age 58. Here is a brief clip from the segment on why he does what he does. You can click here
(http://www.showbuzz.cbsnews.com/stories/2007/10/04/music/main3330463_page2.shtml) for the full transcripts. Below is the quote I loved:
"Every good writer or filmmaker has something eating at them, right? That they can't quite get off their back . And so your job is to make your audience care about your obsessions," Springsteen says.
I don't know why but it reminded me of a comment Chris Matthews made last week when he was interviewed by his wife--for the 10th Anniversary of Hardball. He talks about why he writes and how it's something he has to do, not simply wants to do.
